What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is used to help patients conquer their dental anxiety. Many people with dental fear avoid regular visits and cleanings, which may lead to complex dental problems. Sedation allows patients to be relaxed throughout any procedure, even if multiple treatments are required to fix the dental issues
Dr. Dall’Olmo will evaluate you and your medical background to determine if sedation dentistry is an option for you. He’s IV sedation certified and offers multiple forms of sedation to accommodate many different types of patients.
Nitrous oxide, often known as laughing gas, can be administered through a mask during the procedure. It takes effect immediately when you inhale it, and wears off almost immediately after you stop. This means you can drive yourself to and from the procedure. You’ll be awake and alert throughout treatment, but you’ll be relaxed and you’ll have little to no memory of it.
With oral conscious sedation, you’ll take a pill before treatment. You will probably need a ride to and from the procedure, particularly if you have to take the pill several hours before the treatment. You’re awake during treatment, but totally relaxed throughout the entire thing.
The last form of sedation is IV sedation. This is for patients that are going through extremely advanced procedures, often for restorative purposes. You’ll be completely asleep throughout the procedure, and the sedation will be controlled and monitored by certified professionals throughout the entire process.
