Mouthguards An Overview
Our Santa Monica, CA dentist office offers custom-fabricated sports mouthguards for patients of all ages. From children to adults, sports-related injuries are one of the leading causes of too damage and loss. A custom mouthguard can protect your teeth and jaw from damage during sports.
Protecting your teeth is an investment in your oral health and overall well-being. Broken and missing teeth can be costly to repair, and they do not grow back.
Recent studies have shown that athletes who wear custom-fit mouthguards perform better than when wearing an over-the-counter alternative. Custom mouthguards designed by a dentist fit better and can be worn while drinking water. Athletes are able to focus on the game, not on keeping their mouthguards in place by clenching their jaw.
In addition, consistent teeth clenching is a big factor in developing TMJ disorders. If you’re doing this frequently, it causes the disc in the jaw joint to wear down. This disc is what allows your jaw to move fluidly. TMJ disorders cause your jaw to pop and click and pain in the jaw and throughout your face. You may also develop issues using your jaw properly. It can become difficult and your jaw may even get stuck being open or shut.
Our family dentist office offers custom mouthguards for improved protection and performance during sports.

Mouthguards What to Expect
Mouthguards are custom fit and fabricated for a secure and comfortable fit. The mouthguard design procedure is painless and brief. Dr. Dall’Olmo will take precise molds of the patient’s mouth. The mold will be sent to a dental lab for fabrication. Once the mouthguard is fabricated, patients can pick up their mouthguard from our Santa Monica, CA dentist office.
Custom mouthguards are a great way to protect your children’s teeth and gums during sports. Mouthguards can give parents peace of mind that their child’s mouth is protected while participating in sports.
Our office also offers custom nightguards for TMJ and bruxism overnight. Frequent teeth grinding makes your teeth wear down faster, making them more susceptible to bacteria and tooth decay. Depending on the force used, you can also break or chip your teeth while grinding them. A nightguard helps prevent this damage from happening.
Sports Mouthguards Vs. TMJ Nightguards
If you have one of these types of mouthguards, you may be curious if you can use it to treat both of these conditions. But you should never use a custom mouthguard for any other purpose than what’s been specifically told to you by your dentist.
Sports mouthguards are made of a lightweight, bulkier material. Their purpose is to absorb shock from hits you may take while playing your sport. If you try to wear it overnight for teeth grinding, it’s not built to resist that constant pressure. You’ll damage your mouthguard and likely damage your teeth as well.
Nightguards are made of a thinner, harder material. They’re built to withstand constant grinding and pressure without wearing down. But they’re thin and they fit very snugly on your teeth. If you try to wear one of these while playing sports, it won’t provide any protection from hits or trauma. You’re likely to suffer almost the same effects as you would without wearing a mouthguard at all.
