Emergency Dentistry FAQs

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation where you feel intense oral pain, discomfort or have lost or broken a tooth, dental restoration or filing. Dental emergencies should be addressed as soon as possible for conservative treatment.

In the event of a real emergency, contact 911.

Dental emergencies include:

  • Intense pain or swelling in the face or mouth
  • Lost or knocked out tooth
  • Broken tooth
  • Broken or missing dental filling
  • Boken or missing dental crown
What should I do if I lose a tooth?

If a tooth becomes knocked out it is important to contact our Santa Monica dentist office as soon as possible.

Try to locate the tooth, you may pick it up, but only by the crown.

Try not to touch, scrub or remove any attached root structure.

You can gently rinse the tooth in water and then place it in a cup of your own saliva or milk.

You can also rinse your mouth out, and apply a gentle compress to stop the bleeding.

Bring the tooth with you to your dentist appointment. Dr. Dall’Olmo will try to see you as soon as he can.

We offer full-service dental implant services to replace missing teeth.

What should I do if I break or lose a filling or dental crown?

If a dental crown, filling or other dental restoration is broken, NEVER try to reattach it yourself. Find as much of the broken restoration as possible and bring it with you to your dentist appointment. Contact our dentist office to schedule an appointment. Dr. Dall’Olmo can create a new dental restoration and properly restore your tooth.

Can the ER do anything about tooth pain?

Yes. However, an ER doctor will only be able to provide antibiotics and/or painkillers. If your tooth pain is unbearable and it starts to spread to your neck and jaw, you can go to the ER. But dentists are not in the ER. You need to schedule an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.

Why should you address a dental emergency as soons as possible?

There are several reasons why you should address a dental emergency immediately. You can increase the chances of saving a chipped or knocked-out tooth. A dentist can stop the unnecessary pain you may be suffering from. You can dramatically reduce and avoid the risk of infections. If an infection is left untreated, it can spread and cause other problems.

Do I need to see an emergency dentist for a broken crown?

Yes. If your tooth crown breaks, you should contact an emergency dentist immediately. You will know if you have broken or cracked your tooth crown. Sometimes it will be painful and sometimes it will not be. But an emergency dentist needs to assess the damage to know how serious it is and determine a plan of action.
